2 weeks before surgery

  • Have your Pre-Admission Testing (PAT) done and attend the Joint Class (if appropriate).

  • IF YOU TAKE BLOOD THINNERS: Please contact your prescribing physician for instructions regarding discontinuing the medication prior to surgery.

  • You may continue taking aspirin and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen, Motrin, Aleve, Advil, and meloxicam.

  • Begin taking high-calorie protein shakes daily, especially if your preoperative Albumin test was low. Studies have shown that one protein shake daily for at least 5 days before surgery and for 5 days after surgery reduces the rate of complications. Additionally, supplementation with 20 grams of essential amino acids daily for 1 week before surgery and for 6 weeks after surgery helps reduce muscle loss after the operation. Both protein shakes and amino acid supplements are available on Amazon or at any supplement store.
